What Directors Really Do

“The Patriot” was an excellent movie describing the American Revolution fought in the Thirteen Colonies vividly. It was made from the point of view of a Patriot. Now, the movie might be appealing to the Americans today but it would certainly not impress the British historians in the same way the Americans do. “The Patriot” shows accurate details of the Revolution but probably British historians would say it is biased because it mostly it shows the spirit, courage and bravery of the Patriots and shadowing the British, portraying them as the tyrants (which are in reality, true at that time).

If there was a movie that would be called “The Loyalist”, then it would be a different case. The directors would probably include major events that happened during the Revolution but in favor of the country, they would outline key events viewed as the victories for the British. “The Patriot” was set up during the last years of the Revolution when the Americans got their help from their foreign allies. Probably “The Loyalist” would be set up during the dark times of the Revolution when the Patriots were on the verge of losing. For example, “The Patriot” showed the Battle in Yorktown as its last major scene because that is when the British finally accepted its loss and surrendered. If it was for “The Loyalist”, the last major event would probably be when General Howe takes control of New York when he successfully drove off General George Washington. The reason? That’s because the battle was an event that showed that the Patriots were on the verge of losing the Revolutionary War.

Why do the directors do this? The answer is quite simple. If the movie is suppose to outline all the major events (well, not to say all but most of them), where is the fun in watching the movie? If you were to go to a movie theater and watch a movie that is unbiased and historically accurate, then you’d better be off watching a documentary. A movie is not supposed to explain history in an unbiased way. To make a movie from both sides of view is difficult. As editorial cartoons are supposed to persuade you to a particular event, so are movies. Movies give a positive message to the viewers in an entertaining way, not in a History-class way.
